Quality and Patient Safety
Each year, with the combined counsel of the AHA Board of Trustees, governance committees and management, the AHA updates the strategy plan, taking into account the critical issues and emerging trends in health care. The hallmark of the 2011-2013 AHA Strategic Plan is accountability, including the introduction of Strategic Performance Commitments. Specific to Goal 1 of the plan, these actions make commitments of national significance on behalf of hospitals in the areas of safety, efficiency, and quality.
2011-2013 AHA Strategic Plan — Goal 1
Advance a Health Care Delivery System that Improves Health and Health Care
To pursue strategies and advocate for models and resources that promote patients and communities receiving the right care, at the right time, in the right place.
Strategic Performance Commitments
Through the collective strategies represented in Goal 1 and its association-wide Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence (HPOE) strategy, AHA will provide advocacy, resources and research to America's hospitals and health systems to support them in achievement of these commitments:

CUSP
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that more than 2 million health care-acquired infections occur in U.S. hospitals each year and approximately 99,000 patients who get these infections die as a result. HAIs also result in $4.5 billion in excess health care costs annually. The AHA's Health Resources & Educational Trust, through a contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University Quality and Safety Research Group and the Keystone Center for Patient Safety and Quality of the Michigan Health and Hospital Association, are implementing a nationwide patient safety program proven to dramatically reduce certain health care-acquired infections. Through September 2012, AHRQ will support the national implementation of an educational and technical initiative using the Comprehensive Unit-based Safety Program and interventions to prevent central line-associated blood stream infections and catheter-associated urinary tract infections. As of July 2010, 1,100 hospital units in 30 states are participating in CUSP. read more
