Incorporating Critical Consciousness into Organizational Change Strategies

Examples of and the rationale for strategies used to foster critical consciousness in the work of health equity at Barnes-Jewish Hospital:

  • The delivery and the impact of the 3-day residential anti-oppression based training for our senior leadership and members of the council for diversity and inclusion;
  • Incorporation of anti-oppression concepts (power, privilege, matrix of oppression, etc.)into its 18-hour cultural competence course open to all staff;
  • Ongoing continuing education opportunities; and
  • Strategies for incorporating anti-oppression work into a health equity strategy.
