Focus on Community Health

June 2–8 is Community Health Improvement Week. The Association for Community Health Improvement sponsors the week to increase understanding of the vital role of community health improvement strategies to individual medical care and to broader population health approaches. More and more hospitals and health systems are partnering with schools, churches, YMCAs and other local organizations to improve the health of their communities. These partnerships provide healthy food options for children and families, offer recreational and competitive sports activities and give people the opportunity to live fuller and healthier lives.

Visit the ACHI website at www.communityhlth.org each day this week to find free resources and tools to use on your hospital’s or health system’s journey to improve the health of patients in your community. For example, you can access presentations from interesting sessions at the March 2013 ACHI National Conference. Topics include how to conduct a community needs assessment and integrate the findings and how to communicate community benefit interventions and results through program dashboards.

Explore the Hospitals in Pursuit of Excellence website, too, for valuable resources and case studies on community health.
