HPOE Paves the Way

May 13-19 is National Women's Health Week, a project of the U.S. Health and Human Services' Office of Women's Health. This celebration provides an opportunity to highlight how you can use this website to focus on a specific patient population like women or a specific topic area like perinatal safety, gynecological cancer or disparities in care and gain access to case studies, educational programming, and other resources to accelerate performance improvement. For example, by typing in  "women's health" in the upper right-hand corner, a list of resources appears. You can link to a case study that describes a project at Overlook Medical Center in Summit, NJ, aimed to increase breast cancer survival rates among African American, Latino and Asian or Pacific Islander women. By partnering with local community groups, promoting early detection services and reducing barriers to screening and treatment, Overlook significantly increased the number of women receiving education on breast self-examination and making appointments for mammograms. There's also a link to the API Snapshot guide,  "Improving Perinatal Safety,"  which describes initiatives by U.S. hospitals and health systems to eliminate elective deliveries before 39 weeks and features case examples from Woman's Hospital in Baton Rouge, La., and Seton Family of Hospitals in Central Texas. This guide also provides an implementation overview and outlines process, outcome and balance metrics.
