The Quality-Transparency Connections
Quality improvement and transparency go hand in hand, David Ballard, M.D., senior vice president and chief quality officer for Dallas-based Baylor Health System, said during the AHA/Health Forum Leadership Summit in July. Several years ago, leaders at Baylor Health System decided to begin posting data on a variety of quality performance measures in the physician?s lounge, in an effort to convince physicians the importance of following the hospital?s pre-operation order sets. The data revealed that surgeons who didn?t use the order sets were high outliers on the hospital?s surgical mortality rates, Ballard said. More importantly, the effort sparked a cultural change at Baylor, leading to an organization-wide acceptance of transparency, Ballard said. ?We?ve moved from secrecy is necessary to transparency is necessary in health care,? Ballard said. ??Performance has been un-blinded.? For more information on creating an institutional culture of transparency, contact David Ballard at dj.ballard@baylorhealth.edu.
