Leading to Safety
For executive leaders at Catholic Healthcare Partners, Cincinnati, patient safety is an issue to be actively supported and advanced, not one to be delegated. To improve its culture of safety, CHP implemented patient safety leadership walkrounds and also required systemwide disclosure of serious reportable events. CHP CEO Michael D. Connelly regularly participates in walkrounds at hospitals throughout the system. In addition, the system?s 32 hospital CEOs talk bimonthly to discuss safety events, and board members address safety issues regularly at their meetings. Other initiatives at CHP include creating a patient safety academy for CEOs, prioritizing issues identified during walkrounds and creating interdisciplinary collaboratives that engage physicians. CHP?s 32 hospitals provide health care services to people in Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and southern Michigan.
