Designed for Safety and Efficiency

An integrated approach to project design drove breakthrough improvement in operating results at SSM St. Clare Health Center, a 174-bed full-service community hospital in Fenton, Mo. Diverse patient experience teams and process task forces provided design input. Built in 2009, the hospital is a sustainable and technologically innovative facility that embraces the six IOM aims. For example, for patient-centered care, the building layout provides privacy, choice and control as well as simple, intuitive wayfinding. To achieve efficiency and timeliness, the design team used Lean principles to minimize patient moves and handoffs and create flexibility, scalability and adaptability. To promote safety, nursing units are standardized to maximize patient-staff connection, minimize steps, handoffs and distractions, and prevent falls. The new hospital design also accommodates the needs of vulnerable patients, with furnishings appropriate to patient size and adaptable to honor preferences of patients from diverse backgrounds. Early results show top-decile CMS core measures scores, reduced falls rate and improved patient and employee satisfaction. To learn more, contact Diane McKillip at Diane_McKillip@ssmhc.com.
