Hospitals are working to achieve all elements of the Triple Aim by redesigning traditional ways of delivering care to patients and the community. This collection of case studies features three hospitals and health systems:

SCL Health – Denver, Colorado

  • SCL Health is building four microhospitals in the Denver area to provide more access points for health care around the community. These microhospitals have eight licensed beds for inpatient care and also offer emergency medical care services, observational stay or hospice care; two licensed operating rooms; and on-site laboratory and diagnostic imaging services.

CHI Franciscan Health – Tacoma, Washington

  • In 2016, CHI Franciscan Health built a 4,000 square-foot outpatient midwifery birth center at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, to provide low intervention and early discharge for low-risk expectant mothers. It is the first hospital in the state to have a separate midwifery birth center on its campus.

Texas Health Behavioral Health Hospital – Corinth, Texas

  • By transforming a long-term acute care hospital into an inpatient and outpatient behavioral health facility by September 2017, Texas Health Resources will treat patients of all ages affected by mental illnesses, psychiatric behaviors and substance and alcohol abuse. To address high rates of mental illness and suicide in Denton County, this facility will offer counseling services and medication management through psychiatrists.
