North Shore University Hospital’s palliative care unit emphasizes quality of life by providing patients and their families the care and support they need. This family-centered unit features private rooms, 24/7 visiting hours and pet therapy. Experts are on hand to relieve symptoms such as:

  • Acute pain;
  • Chronic pain;
  • Nausea;
  • Shortness of breath;
  • Sleep problems; and
  • Weight loss.

Caregivers are also on hand to provide emotional support to family members.

This case study is part of the NYS Triple Aim series highlighting how New York hospitals are improving health, enhancing quality and reducing costs. Hospitals, nursing homes, and home care agencies across New York State are pursuing the Triple Aim. In spite of fiscal constraints, its members are embracing the challenge of transforming health care and are implementing new and innovative approaches to delivery.

The American Hospital Association honors innovative palliative and end-of-life care in hospices, hospitals, health care systems, long-term care facilities and other direct care providers.  The yearly Circle of Life awards winders are announced in July.
