Elimination of Elective Induction of Labor and Scheduled Elective Cesarean Section Before 39 Weeks Gestation

A performance improvement project was initiated to reduce the number of elective inductions and cesarean sections.

Performance improvement plans included: development of a policy statement establishing dating criteria and acceptable gestational age timeframes for elective induction of labor and scheduled elective C-section; medical education (particularly OB-GYN practitioners); patient education; change management techniques and performance improvement department auditing. In calendar year 2011, the medical center achieved its goal of eliminating elective inductions and C-sections. 

This case study is part of the Illinois Hospital Association's annual quality awards. Each year, IHA recognizes and celebrates the achievements of Illinois hospitals in continually improving and transforming health care in the state.
