image

This guide is a synopsis of a conversation held at the Association for Healthcare Resource & Materials Management's annual conference held in July, 2013 in San Diego. Sponsored by VHA, this forum provided an opportunity for experts to discuss the "cost, quality and outcomes movement" in supply chain strategies. The report provides examples of new strategies including:

  • A magnet hospital that is teaching resource utilization functions to its nursing teams.
  • How to inform primary care physicians about cost, quality and outcomes of specialists and surgeons prior to making referrals.
  • How to work with the specialists on efforts to reduce the full costs of hospitalizations.

The second half of the report focuses on moving from the first curve to the second curve of health care.  Heather Jorna, vice president, health care innovation for HRET, explained the 10 "must-do" strategies from the groundbreaking reports, Hospitals and Care Systems of the Future. and Metrics for the Second Curve of Health Care.
