Call to Stop a Fall

The Problem

Falls can occur at any time during the hospitalization, resulting in complications such as soft tissue changes, fracture and decline in function, as well as increased length of stay and hospital costs. Hospital costs for treatment of a fall in an elderly patient have been estimated at greater than $15,00. The main goals of Bronson's fall prevention efforts were to:

  1. Reduce patient falls; and
  2. Keep patients as safe as possible during their hospital stay.

The divisonal nursing shared governance council clinical quality committee initated a "Call to Stop a Fall" campaign to reduce the risk of falls through patient education, staff training, protocol changes and by partnering with the safe patient handling comittee.
