Embracing Diversity

Changing demographics continue to fuel the growth of cultural diversity in Northeast Ohio. In turn, the population served by University Hospitals, Cleveland, has become more ethnically diverse. To better serve current patients and welcome new patients, UH's board charged hospital leadership with incorporating more diversity in the organization's culture. Senior leaders created a diversity council, which has focused on ensuring a multicultural group of administrative leaders and recruiting and retaining talented minority faculty and health care professionals. In addition, UH has emphasized supplier diversity and created a full-time position with responsibilities that include identifying minority vendors. Since 1991, UH has increased representation of minority physicians on the house staff from 3 percent to 10 percent. In 2011, minorities represent 28 percent of UH's board. For more information on University Hospitals' diversity initiatives, contact Donnie Perkins, vice president for diversity and inclusion, at Donnie.Perkins@UHhospitals.org.
