Developing Leaders, Eliminating Disparities

A medical staff that is committed to social justice and a vision statement that includes reducing health care disparities. Alameda County Medical Center had these pieces in place to address disparities. Participating in the Disparities Leadership Program , at Massachusetts General Hospital, was the mechanism that "crystallized" the issue, explains Mini Swift, M.D., a teaching hospitalist at ACMC, a 475-bed public hospital system on six campuses based in Alameda County, CA. The DLP's one-year fellowship emphasizes collecting race and ethnicity data, improving cultural competency and developing interventions to reduce health care disparities. After stratifying clinical outcomes by race, ethnicity and language in a few pilot clinics, ACMC created an equity council in 2010 that includes CEO Wright Lassiter III, the chair of the ACMC board of directors, executive staff, medical leadership and public health department staff. Next steps include creating system-wide reports that stratify patient experience and core measures by race, ethnicity and language, and moving to intervention.
