On the CUSP: Stop BSI, an IHA Collaborative to Reduce CLABSI

image

The hospital joined the On the CUSP: Stop BSI  collaborative offered by IHA. The focus was on CLABSI reductions starting in the surgical intensive  care unit, and then house-wide, including the cardiovascular intensive care unit, using the same evidence based best practices.

Building on their 2007 CLABSI reduction collaborative, CUSP allowed them to evaluate needed improvements to achieve their reduction goals and to work toward sustained reductions.

CVICU CLABSI data show an 80 percent reduction in cases from 2010 (five cases) to 2011 (one case). Zero cases were identified in the 2012 data available to date (January–May).

This case study is part of the Illinois Hospital Association's annual quality awards. Each year, IHA recognizes and celebrates the achievements of Illinois hospitals in continually improving and transforming health care in the state. These hospitals are improving health by striving to achieve the Triple Aim--improving the patient experience of care (including quality and satisfaction); improving the health of populations; and reducing the per capita cost of health care.

Award recipients achieve measurable and meaningful progress in providing care that is:

  • Safe
  • Timely
  • Effective
  • Efficient
  • Equitable
  • Patient-centered
