AHA Influenza Vaccination Resources

In early 2011, AHA members, committees, regional policy boards and staff discussed and crafted a mandatory influenza vaccination policy, which was then approved by the board of directors:

America’s hospitals are committed to protecting the health and well-being of patients and staff. Evidence has emerged over the past few years clearly indicating that health care workers can unintentionally expose patients to seasonal influenza if they (the workers) have not been vaccinated, and such exposure can be dangerous to vulnerable patients. To protect the lives and welfare of patients and employees, AHA supports mandatory patient safety policies that require either influenza vaccination or wearing a mask in the presence of patients across health care settings during flu season. The aim is to achieve the highest possible level of protection.

HPOE has compiled a list of journal articles supporting this decision. Additionally, HPOE has compiled a list of hospital examples.

For further questions, please contact Nancy Foster, AHA vice president of quality and patient safety, or Roslyne Schulman, AHA director of policy.

The AHA held three conference calls featuring speakers from hospitals with mandatory vaccination policies. These calls highlight best practices.
