Safety and Health Management System

The United States Department of Labor Occupational Safety & Health Administration office released a set of resources to assist hospital leaders in developing a safety and health management system--a proactive, collaborative process to find and fix workplace hazards before employees are injured or become ill. While most hospitals have processes in place to address worker safety, these resources were developed and tested by 14 hospitals in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs.

These resources explain how a safety and health management system align with Joint Commission standards, provides a self-assessment tool to get started and guidelines describing the system and how to implement it.

Hospitals that participated on the voluntary program obtained and sustained great results and their stories and success are documented in the resource set.
