Changes in Readmission Incentives & Accountability

Presented by Eric A. Coleman, MD,  this webinar addressed proposed changes in how hospitals are reimbursed for readmissions. The discussion provided a historical perspective on hospital reimbursement and reviewed the literature on demographics and frequency of hospital readmissions. Opportunities to prevent readmissions were reviewed within the general context of post-hospital follow-up and care. The session also reviewed national quality improvement initiatives and current and pending incentives and penalties related to readmissions and care coordination. Highlights from a recent consensus document authored by 6 physician professional societies were referenced to provide a framework for discussion accountability. The session concluded with an update of proposed changes in national health policy.
